I Am Not Old

“I will most definitely be outrageous, difficult and undignified,
but not until I am old.”
Judith Baxter, Blogger, Mother, Sister, Grandmother and friend.
1938 –
I make no secret of my vast age. I know how very lucky I am to have had such a long and interesting life. Many don’t have the good fortune to reach this age.
I have bored you with this on several earlier posts.
I compared myself to a classic car in Vintage?  “I too am kept in a warm dry house (rather than a garage) away from the vagaries of the weather.  I’m cleaned, polished and primped.  I have regular services, hairdressers, facials, manicures, pedicures, dentists and the occasional visit to the GP”
I gave you fair warning that I wasn’t going to age gracefully ” So people who know me are not too shocked and surprised When suddenly I am old and start to wear purple”
And again in Rambling with an OctogenarianI mused on growing old along with others and said  “When I think of old I imagine an old person sitting in a chair doing nothing active. I don’t want to be that person. I have said in the past that I want to hike into my old age. “
And of course, we all know that Strange Old Lady who seems to inhabit all our houses as we get older – “Imagine my surprise, therefore, when I looked in the mirror and saw this Old Woman looking out at me.”

Granny on computer

(sigh….. bet that strange old lady is on “her” puter too!) What’s a body to do??????

Then today when noodling around the internet with coffee in hand, I came across this:

I am not old … she said … I am rare.

I am the standing ovation

At the end of the play.

I am the retrospective
Of my life as art

I am the hours
Connected like dots
Into good sense

I am the fullness
Of existing.

You think I am waiting to die …
But I am waiting to be found

I am a treasure.
I am a map.

And these wrinkles are
Imprints of my journey

Ask me anything.

  1. I like this. I think it’s because I’m swiftly coming upon my 70th birthday. The late Mother Angelica of EWTN (the Catholic TV Network) was a proponent of the blessings of getting older. She felt that our spirit never gets old, and that one of the saddest things was to have a body that didn’t try its best to keep in step with its never-aging spirit.

  3. LOve it! Ageism is still rife in many walks of life. I often post younger versions of myself on my profiles to remind people I was once young and still am in my mind and deserve to be treated as an equal in all of my endeavours- mainly through my art. well said Samantha Reynolds! 🙂

    • Unfortunately, ageism is alive and well all over tge world. We have come a long way as far as women in the workforce, but we have so much further to go to clear the ageism spectre.

  6. The poem by Samantha Reynolds is right on. My mom is 91, and although immobile, she still has the cheerful smile of a twenty-year-old. Sending hugs your way, Judith.

  7. Yes, I liked the standing ovation line too . It’s nice to hear others perspectives on an inescapable process, but at least we can do it with style and a smile!
I’m in agreement with you. It takes a long time to get here, but purple is a fantastic colour and enjoying life’s little pleasures is a gift. Enjoy yourself and your friendships, laugh lots and be content.

  9. Love this! Love bring rare. Like being a rare find. I’ll remind my kids next time I have a senior moment. Need to keep our humor. Older is definitely better.

  10. I needed to read this today. I’m turning 50 next Spring. I can’t believe it because my heart says I’m way younger than that, & I still have so much dreams to venture. But then, there’s the unforgiving mirror, the wrinkles and grey hair are a reminder to slow down & just try to enjoy life now. To stop chasing the world & pleasing others & just chase for what the heart wants & learn to love self. It’s a work in progress. For now, I will put your words to heart….happy weekend my friend. ☀️🙏
