What Has Gone So Wrong?

There’ll be love and laughter
And peace ever after.
Tomorrow, when the world is free

So sang Vera Lynn and many  others during the Second World War. So what has gone so very wrong in the intervening years?  Love and laughter has been taken over by hate and tears and the world is not free.

From this quiet and peaceful little corner of the world we have looked on at the hate and disruptions caused by the hate, taking over our world.  We even have one of the Presidential candidates in the USA seemingly encouraging spread of hate at least to the other candidate, and of course to Mexican, Muslims etc etc.  How can this be we ask ourselves.

Have we forgotten all that was learned at such great cost?  Children are still living in areas surrounded by bombs as did we in the early 1940s.  They are still being injured both physically and emotionally and the bombing now is so much worse than during the Second War.  Bigger and more directed bombs and these children are right in the middle of the war.

When will we learn that we can’t keep doing the same thing and expect a different result.   When will the powers that be, those in position to make a  stop to these non achieving wars, accept that something has to change.

Daily on TV we see the result of the bombs on the lives of families who have done nothing more than to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.

And apart from the damage to the humans what about the destruction of buildings steeped  in history and meaning for the population and of course, the damage to the earth.  All of these things will take centuries to repair, if in fact they can be repaired and renewed.

Now is the time for us to stand up and be counted.  A petition has been taken to our politicians objecting to more money being spent on sending troops to the wars.  What else can we do other than sign the petitions?  I don’t know but what I’m doing is spreading love and kindness wherever and whenever I can.  If we all do a little, maybe something big will come out of it.

End of today’s rant.

  5. Dear Judith, you say:

Actually, who is old enough to remember the early 1940s?
Well, I was born in 1934. I do remember only too well, how in the
German city of Leipzig – in what probably has been the very last bomb raid over Leipzig before the end of WW II – the very solidly built five story building that we lived in, was raised to the ground by several bombs, and we were in the cellar of that building as it happened!

Our mantra after the ending of the war was: Nie wieder Krieg – No war ever again! I remember shortages of food and hardly any fuel for heating, indeed shortages of everything. To this day my generation is trying never to waste anything at all, and especially not to waste food. We felt then that in great part exaggerated nationalism was to blame for all this war-mongering. We were full of hope that our future would be one of tranquility and peace.

At the end of my life I ask myself too: What has gone so wrong?

    • Hello Uta and thanks for your comment. As are you I’m old enough to remember the bombing in London during the war and really feel for these poor children and their parents. And what do they have to look forward to. When will we learn from past mistakes. Isn’t that what we tried to teach our children but today’s children are learning from all the wrong sources.

As with you the mantra in the UK was never agin but so soon after the end of that war we/they were at it again

  6. Your post sounds more of a lament than a rant, Judith, but I must agree with you. Here in the US it is embarrassing to hear a presidential candidate spew discord and rudeness to all. Is there no civility when there are important issues to resolve? All I can do is vote, speak out, and show love and tolerance. Peace and love to you and your part of the world!

    • Thanks for reading and commenting. Yes it is a lament really and I don’t know how to rectify it. Just keep spreading love and hopefully if enough of us do it some changes may be made.
