Lazy Sunday Afternoon

“Lazy Sunday afternoon,
I’ve got no mind to worry,
Close my eyes and drift away,”

Are you old enough to remember the Small Faces singing this song in 1968?  The group was formed in the mid 60s by four boys from the East End of London and this song reached No 2 on the UK Singles Hit List in 1968.  How innocent we all were then.

But this post is not about the band, or even about that song.  It just came to mind as we were sitting devouring the weekend papers in the sunshine in our garden on a Lazy Sunday Afternoon.  We had a busy morning and now we’re relaxing.

How different is our Sunday in this peaceful corner of the world, from the mayhem that is happening in most other places.  Do these terrorists think so little of the gift of life that they can rampage through peaceful communities bent on destruction?

Yesterday we heard of the latest in the string of atrocities perpetrated by Boko Haram  – At least 10 people were killed when a young girl, thought to be aged 10, blew herself up at a crowded market in the northeast Nigerian city of Maiduguri.  Apparently she had bombs strapped to her body.  Was she given a choice?  I suspect not.

So friends, take care as we never know when something awful might happen

And from my little book of dog wisdom* :-

“Life is a precious gift.
Treat it delicately and be grateful for it,
but most importantly celebrate and enjoy it”

  1. Life goes on, Judith, it must. Terror or not, if we let terrorism change how we think or act then the terrorist has won.
That’s easy for me to say, sitting here in the safety of my kitchen, but I applaud the instant reaction of the French authorities, and the non-negotionable stance of the British government, I would gladly give up all I have, including my life to ensure the future safety for my children, and children’s children.

  2. Terrorism must never be allowed to win but many of them know that our reactions to Arabs, Muslims, Mosques, in the wake of these killings will gain them more recruits. Understandable as it is by some, we have to ensure that not all are tarred by the same brush and that we’re happy to co-exist with them. When the suspicion they have for us is lessened again, maybe they’ll start turning in those they know or suspect of terrorism.
Even allowing for free speech, when those within our countries are heard to spout hate and incite killings, they must be dealt with firmly, an that includes the fundamentalists on our side too. The best way to protect the future safety of those to come after us is to work towards world peace and understanding. We need to practise tolerance.
Great record by the small faces, such a sad end for poor Stevie Marriott.

  4. If only the atrocities in Nigeria and other African countries received the same attention as in the Western world … I must say, I agree with the above comments, too. And yes – poor Stevie Marriott, who bounced around like a two-year-old on the video of that song. Such joie de vivre!

  6. I cannot imagine living in a place where fear is the norm. There is ugliness in this beautiful world…so sad. Yet, we must not give in to hopelessness.

    • I was brought up during the Blitz in the Second World War in London. As a very young child I thought everybody lived with the fear of bombing. No child should have to live with that and yet, even after all the wars nothing really has changed.

    It isn’t hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
    And no religion too
    Imagine all the people
    Living life in peace…

Hope you and your George are both well. Happy 2015.

  10. Hi Judith! It’s been so long since I’ve had time to sit and catch up. I’ve been waiting for this opportunity and have a fresh cup of coffee ready. 🙂 Is your 4-legged helper typing for you now?
