Mr Nobody

Have you met Mr Nobody yet?  When we were growing up he was a regular visitor to our house and again when my children were younger, he was often there too.

I know a funny little man,
As quiet as a mouse,
Who does the mischief that is done
In everybody’s house.
There’s no one ever sees his face,
And yet we all agree
That every plate we break was cracked
By Mr. Nobody

Chipped plate

‘Tis he who always tears our books,
who leaves our doors ajar;
he pulls the buttons from our shirts,
and scatters pins afar,
that squeaking door will always squeak,
because of this you see:
we leave the oiling to be done
by Mr Nobody.

He puts damp wood upon the fire,
So kettles cannot boil;
His are the feet that bring in mud
And all the carpets soil.
The papers always are mislaid,
Who had them last but he?
There’s no one tosses them about
But Mr. Nobody

And now I come to think of it, perhaps he and that Very Strange Old Lady have got together and decided that my home is where they want to co-habit, living  in blissful disinterest in how they upset my routine and my life.  I just wish they would find somewhere else.  Does anybody have a spare room for this awkward couple?

  1. What, they came back? But I sent them to you ages ago. I thought they’d be happy there! 😉

  2. Growing up I remember Bil Keane, the illustrator of the cartoon Family Circus. His returning character in the cartoon strip was “Not Me”. A ghost like drawing who appeared whenever the kids were questioned about a broken item. I think “Not Me” is the child of Mr. Nobody.

    Judith, d’you remember that when we were children, our parents had another poem about Mr. Nobody:
    “As I was going up the stair,
    I met a man who wasn’t there.
    He wasn’t there again, today;
    I wish that man would go away.”
    God bless,

    • Funny I have just been talking about Mr Nobody with a friend who recited just that little poem back to me. I can’t say that I remember it when we were growing up – are you sure we lived in the same house with the same parents?

  5. I’m with Lenore – this reminded me of the Not Me (and Ida Know) Family Circus characters. These guys, and Mr. Nobody, do swing by occasionally, but thankfully, they don’t linger 🙂

  6. Interesting! In our house it was “somebody” left their bike in the driveway last night, or “somebody” didn’t feed the dog, or “sombody” forgot to water the yard.:)

    The old lady still scowls at me if I catch sight of her in the mirrow, but Mr Nobody is a great listener. 🙂
