Happy Christmas Mrs B

Yesterday while out walking with madam I slipped on some loose gravel and now have my leg in a” back slab cast”.  Apparently, I have fractured my ankle and so have to have this on for 12 days (10 days but as Christmas comes into the counting we can make it 12 days).  No comment as to what will happen after the 12 days, was forthcoming.

My Christmas present to myself

As I think in most places, the A & E Department of the local hospital does not have a good rep, but I have to say that I was treated with total respect, care and understanding.  What is more, I was in and out complete with cast, in under two hours.  I have made a point of telling the staff how impressed I am with this.

There was really very little waiting around not like when I had to go to the private A & E.  I was there for hours and then was given a hefty account.  Yesterday’s service was FREE.

This, of course, will certainly slow me down over the next few weeks.  I can’t drive so am dependent on others and this, as you may know, is not really in my nature. I have said in the past that I am working on being gracious and so I am graciously accepting all offers of help.

Today two grandsons appeared telling me that they were here to do whatever I needed them to do.  What fantastic young boys who will most certainly grow into fantastic young men.  We had a very enjoyable day.  They wrapped all the Christmas presents and the eldest, at 14, even tried his hand at tying bows.

So I now have to learn to slow down, ask for and accept the help that is on offer and give thanks that the damage was not more serious.

  1. So sorry to hear about you ankle Judith! Hope you aren’t to uncomfortable and inconvenienced. Whenever something like that happens my wife always says “I could have been worse but the angels were looking out for you.” It’s a good way to think about it.

Now you can show off your beautifully painted toenails. 🙂

  3. Bummer, Judith. How nice to have a day with your grandsons though, eh? The visual of the 14yr old attempting bows is lovely, too. Good for him!
Nothing like being forced to settle in for the holidays, letting others help you stay rested. Sounds like a wonderful Christmas present, Judith. Especially if you are able to accept it. (smile)

    • The presents are perhaps not as I would have wrapped them but hey, they were wrapped with love and in laughter. What more could a Granma ask for? And now I think I shall have to get used to others doing all these things for me; I am trying to smile.

  4. Hi there, sorry to hear about your fall and recently broken as well and the back slab cast is very uncomfortable compared to a proper cast. I suggest you go back and ask for one and don’t wait the 12 days.

    • Thanks Amy. following your advice and a friend who recently did the same thing, I called to make an appointment. Next Thursday is the soonest but it is better than waiting the 12 days which would have brought me to Boxing Day.

  5. Judith, this is one gift no one will envy! My husband is the same way, he’d much rather do everything himself and never ask for help, though he’s always doing for others. He did have to ask a neighbor for assistance, and the fellow was so glad to repay the kindness he’d been shown. I hope you can enjoy the fruit of your labors, as you have sown love and kindness, may you reap bountifully.

    • Well, we had to ask a neighbour to drive my friend so that he could bring my car home. The neighbours are all concerned and have offered help. Strange how people do rally around when needed.

  6. Hope you recovery soon. Your right though in saying its time to slow down and accept help. We can turn a bad situation into good ones depending on how we see it. Looks like you found a rainbow in the midst of the stress of having a fractured ankle. Merry Christmas. Wishing you and your family love , happiness and good health.

Oh, boy. This is not fun. My mom broke both of her ankles in June and had to have immediate surgery on one ankle. She was confined to a wheelchair for about a month. She said that the most difficult part was to allow other people to do things for her and loosen her control on “how it should be done.” Sounds like you and she should chat. 🙂
Hope you’re back on your feet soon – literally and figuratively.

    • Wow! Breaking both ankles, how ghastly. Hope she is back to normal now. Yes, I agree we should chat. Send her over here for coffee. It will be a few weeks before I can take myself to somebody else s house.

  10. Ouch! After 12 days will you get a walking cast? In the meantime do enjoy some spoiling by those who care for you–it will be your gift to them you know.

    • Thanks for the comment. I did enjoy the day with the boys and I think they did too. The day was rounded off by a visit from them with their mother and then another friend called in and so we had a little party going here.

    • After nly three days I am beginning to understand cabin fever. But I tell myself this too will pass. And now I can see the funny side of it. Showering is hilarious and getting upstairs on the bum and then getting onto the knees and hauling oneself up is not a pretty sight.

    • I hope it will teach me patience. It is teaching me to accept the help offered. Ventured out for a drive with a friend yesterday so I felt much better when I returned. But today I got the cast wet in the shower and now have to go to get it replaced. Feel another blog coming up.

  24. So awfully sorry this had to happen to you … especially during the holidays! I guess we can look on the bright side and be glad it’s not any worse, right? Still, it’s no fun being laid up or having to depend on others for things we’re used to doing for ourselves. Here’s to a speedy recovery!
