Murder She Wrote

Way back in June my blogging friend Chris at bridgesburning wrote about Jessica Fletcher the writer/protagonist in the series “Murder She Wrote”.  Chris has apparently always wanted to be like Jessica and very kindly named me as being like the redoubtable Mrs Fletcher.  Note – all those years ago she was Mrs not Ms.

Jessica Fletcher aka Angela Lansbury

We have a TV channel here that shows repeats of old series and guess what, “Murder She Wrote” has recently turned up on it.  But it just isn’t the same as when I used to watch it with the children.  Guess it’s like going back to a great place where you once holidayed only to find it is not as you remember it.

There is of course a whole slew of new programmes (well new to us anyway) and of course, as we are going into the doldrums, silly season summer, the powers that make the decisions will decide to fill our screens and lives with more reruns.

So we will watch reruns of Waking the Dead and Spooks and reasonably new episodes of series from the US, Criminal Minds, The Mentalist, Castle, NCIS etc and hope that the sun shines and we can spend most evenings sitting outside without the TV.  But I must admit that some of those programmes are habit forming, and I have them recorded and set to record for future episodes so that I can always blob out on a wet afternoon catching up on the antics of the Criminal Minds BAU team.

I particularly love the quirky females in some of these programmes.

  1. I love Murder She Wrote, it’s just wonderful. 🙂
Don’t you think Jessica Fletcher is Miss Marple re-incarnated. 😀

  2. I have a Jessica Fletcher bike (that’s what my husband calls it), no gears, foot brakes. Love it. Here in the US, we try to catch the BBC stuff on Netflix. For my money, no one can beat the Amazing Mrs. Pritchard, nor the actress who plays her – Jane Horrocks of Ab Fab and of course the incredible “Little Voice”! (Abby and Garcia, thanks for mentioning! Love them both, we are avid fans!) Amy

    • Wow, a Jessica Fletcher bike. I haven’t seen Mrs Pritchard and don’t think it was aired here. But a shall look out for it. I know it got rave reviews in the UK and as we have a channel devoted to UK programmes here, perhaps we might get to see it sometime.

  3. me too. Love Abby and Garcia – they make the shows! I do miss them now that I don’t have TV. Maybe see about buying seasons at some point. Then they can be watched without commercial breaks which is fab.

  4. Never was a “Murder She Wrote” fan, but I do love CSI Las Vegas and CSI New York and Miami. NCSI is good, also, but I don’t watch that as often.

I usually watch BBC America. Top Gear is a must for me!

    • We too get quite a lot of BBC stuff here and so that is usually first choice. But I have a whole slew of programmes recorded to watch if things get really bad on the TV front (and if the weather plays up) in the coming months.

  5. When we watch those old shows, they’re never the same as when they first came out. We remember them as being different than how they really were. My husband wanted our children, who were young teens at the time, to watch a movie he had loved, The Guns of Navaronne, and kept telling them how fantastic it was. He rented it and we all watched it together and kept waiting for it to be entertaining. We all, including my husband, were completely bored by it. We still tease him about it.

By the way, I love thinking about you having summer now as we are moving closer to winter here. I forget that our climes are flip-flopped.

    • Hi Susan. The one film that did live up to expectations when we watched it again with our children and then their children was The Wizard of Oz! Love it still.
And yes, hopefully this year we will have a good summer. Our weather is so unpredictable. Summer is here and yesterday it was cold enough for sweaters again. Ugh!

  6. Hi Judith:

    Just checking in!

    Love that Eleanor Roosevelt quote!

  7. I loved watching Murder She Wrote. It was a staple of our Sunday nights, and it was one of the few shows I watched with my parents.
Nowadays I am a fan of NCIS. The fast, smart, and witty dialogue keeps me entertained – as does Abby. She’s a hoot!

  8. You mentioned my favorite shows, too. Love those criminal investigations!

  9. I love the unique women of those shows also. It’s nice to see good roles that Are interesting!
