Sunsets and Sunrises

Sunset

Ducks on the lake at sunset

“Sunsets are the prelude to another beautiful day.  And whatever happens the sun will rise tomorrow.”
Judith Baxter

We know that whatever has happened in our lives today the sun will set and then tomorrow the sun will rise again bringing a brand new day with its promise.  This is immutable a constant in our lives and cannot be changed.

We might want this day to last for longer than 24 hours because we are enjoying it so much or we might not want tomorrow to come because we dread what it might/will bring.  But we cannot stop time; we cannot stop one day moving into the next.  We can only hope that each new day will bring some joy into our lives.

As the song says :

“Sunrise sunset sunrise sunset
Swiftly flow the days
Seedlings turn overnight to sunflowers
Blossoming even as we gaze.
Sunrise sunset sunrise sunset
Swiftly fly the years
One season following another
Laden with happiness and tears.”

And would we want it any other way?  In this ever changing world these two things, sunset and sunrise are immutable.  We can rely on these things happening even when everything else in our lives seem to be off-key or out of balance.

I love the quote from Max Lucado, author, preacher  1955 –

“Next time a sunrise steals your breath or a meadow of flowers leaves you speechless, remain that way. Say nothing, and listen as heaven whispers, “Do you like it? I did it just for you.”

It applies equally to sunsets.

This post was inspired by the Island Traveler.  Read his post on sunsets here.
His photographs are magical and his accompanying words are worth reading.

  1. I love sunsets. I always try to take note of it each night because they’re never the same.
I love sunrises on the beach. Those are rare for me since I don’t get to the beach that often that early in the morning. But the ones I’ve seen are burned into my memory and I refer to them now and then.

Lovely. I’ve always loved sunsets. When I was married, we timed it so that we could incorporate a sunset. While sunrises are magnificent as well, there is something about sunset that feels magical, promising peace and happiness as the day wanes.

  5. My friend, those lyrics were so beautiful just like the rest of of the words that went with this post. The sunset was amazing but what made it more unforgettable were your heartfelt words that were full of wisdom, inspiration and loving thought. Thank you for making my day so happy and bright. I was reluctant to give a part of myself with the sunset post. I thought it was too painful not just for me bur it might be too sad for others to read. But now I realized it was the right thing to do. Sometimes when we share our pain, the hurts feels less agonizing and best of all, it makes others be aware that they are not alone in their struggles. May God bless you always and the works that you do. Thanks for sharing my post on sunsets….

  8. Good post. Love the song and the play that it comes from. I take many sunset pictures but never sunrise ones because I’m not an early riser.

BTW, check our my latest post, “A walk in the park.” I took all the photos with my iphone. You inspired me by learning to do so as soon as you got your phone. iphone is known for its quality camera and I hadn’t even paid attention. Thanks.

  16. What a beautiful golden sunset. I am happy to be visiting your blog for your words of wisdom. I have recently embarked on a new stage in my life, retirement… I am looking forward to each new day, each sunrise filled with new promise. As Max Lucado says, lets remember to stop for a moment when we encounter beauty and listen for the whisper from heaven.
