This is my favourite Christmas song this year. It was written and is performed by Tim Minchin an Australian comedian, songwriter and poet. Most of you will probably not have heard of this guy but I understand he is really big in the UK. If you haven’t heard this song click here.
I don’t like much of his material but share this song with you. It makes sense to those of us who celebrate Christmas in the summer on the other side of the world.
I think it must have been written when his second child was born and they were coming back to Australia for Christmas because the song goes on..

I first heard it played at a wedding Christmas 2009 at Old St Pauls church where I used to be the Wedding Coordinator. I loved it immediately but couldn’t find out who the artist was or where to purchase a copy. Yesterday while driving in the car, I heard it played. It had been nominated as the day’s “Best Song Ever Written” on National Radio. So my lead up to Christmas is now complete and I share this song with you.

I adore Tim Minchin and have been known to roll around the floor in fits of laughter when watching his DVDs. His mannerisms are hilarious and i think he has a great combination of talents. The one thing that strikes me most though, are his poignant lyrics (especially with white wine in the sun) and how he can reduce an audience to tears in a matter of minutes. I found this when watching with a live show group of male friends of mine a few years back. At the end of the show, he played his song ‘not perfect’ – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b6cX5jh7p6I – the tears were rolling down my cheeks. I didn’t want to look round and disturb everyone, but you could hear a pin drop. When he finished, i looked round. Five grown men in their late 20s/early 30’s were puffy eyed, embarrassed and wiping frantically! I was worried about looking like a wuss in public! That was a great moment. Maybe it had nothing to do with Tim at all… maybe it was all the home made wine we drank before the show!

This was a new one for me, and I found it touching. Whether one believes in the story of Christmas or just enjoys the traditions, Christmas has many powerful memories for all of us. Nice post, Judith.

Thinking of Christmas in the sun is hard to wrap one’s mind around, Judith. There is much truth about the commercialism that it has come to be; but being with family is the best part.
